365Daily – The Federal Government (FG) has unveiled plans to more than double Nigeria’s livestock sector’s current annual contribution of over $32 billion to the economy to over $64bn through increased investment and modernisation of the industry.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, disclosed this while delivering President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s keynote address at the 9th All Africa Conference on Animal Agriculture in Abuja.
Akume said the government’s strategy would focus on improving livestock productivity, animal health, genetics, dairy production, meat processing, feed production, ranching and infrastructure.
He said the transformation of the sector would create millions of jobs, strengthen food security, reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported dairy products and expand economic opportunities for women and young Nigerians.
According to him, the application of innovation, science and technology, alongside stronger cooperation among African countries, would position Nigeria to play a leading role in the transformation of Africa’s livestock industry.
He said the government remains committed to building a modern, productive and globally competitive livestock sector capable of contributing significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth.
