The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has described the proposed South East gas pipeline project as a strategic investment capable of accelerating industrialisation, attracting businesses and creating jobs across the region.
Kalu stated this while representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the South East Gas Pipeline Infrastructure Investment Ceremony organised by the South East Development Commission (SEDC) at Hotel Presidential in Enugu.
He said the proposed project would improve access to reliable energy for businesses and industries, reduce reliance on expensive energy alternatives and create an enabling environment for manufacturing and other productive sectors.
The 400-kilometre pipeline is expected to link the ANOH Gas Processing Plant in Imo State with major commercial and industrial centres across the five South East states.
According to the Deputy Speaker, the project has the potential to strengthen industrial activities in Aba, support manufacturing clusters in Nnewi and Onitsha, attract investments to Enugu and expand agro-processing and manufacturing opportunities in Ebonyi State.
He noted that the initiative would also connect Imo State’s gas resources to the broader regional economy, emphasising the need for the five states to operate as interconnected economic partners to maximise their collective potential.
Kalu commended the SEDC Board and Management, led by Mark Okoye, for prioritising infrastructure projects that address the region’s development needs and promoting partnerships to facilitate their implementation.
He also acknowledged President Tinubu’s support for the development of the South East and development commissions across the country, stressing the importance of targeted interventions in driving economic growth and improving livelihoods.
The Deputy Speaker further appreciated Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, for the hospitality extended to participants at the event, while commending the commission for its efforts towards fulfilling its mandate.
Kalu expressed optimism that strategic infrastructure investments, effective partnerships and sustained commitment would help translate the South East’s economic potential into tangible outcomes, including industrial expansion, increased business activity, job creation and improved opportunities for communities across the region.
The proposed pipeline is expected to provide an important energy link for the region’s industrial and commercial centres, although its anticipated economic benefits will depend on successful implementation and access to the infrastructure by businesses.
