365Daily – Hon Afam Victor Ogene has resigned from the Labour Party and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing the lingering leadership crisis within the party.
Until his resignation in plenary on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Ogene served as Leader of the Labour Party Caucus in the House.
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, he notified the House of his decision, stressing that the internal crisis in the Labour Party had become intractable despite efforts to restore stability.
“I respectfully submit my formal resignation from the Labour Party, effective immediately, due to the prevailing leadership crisis within the party,” he wrote.
Ogene explained that as a former leader within the party, he had made several attempts to resolve the issues but those efforts failed to yield results.
“As a former leader, I have exhausted all avenues to address the challenges and restore stability, but to no avail,” he stated.
The lawmaker added that his decision to leave the party followed extensive consultations with his constituents, family members and political associates.
“Following consultations with my constituents, family, and associates, I have resolved to join the African Democratic Congress as a member and stakeholder, aligning with my vision to continue serving the people,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to members of the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives for the support extended to him during his time as their leader.
“I appreciate the support and trust reposed in me during my tenure as Leader of the Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives and kindly request your continued support and cooperation in my new platform,” Ogene added.
His defection is the latest development in the ongoing internal crisis that has rocked the Labour Party in recent months, leading to growing uncertainty within the party’s ranks and sparking concerns about its cohesion ahead of future political contests.
