365Daily– The Federal Government has announced the removal of Mathematics as a compulsory subject for candidates seeking admission into arts-related programmes in Nigerian universities.
According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, the decision is aimed at expanding access to higher education for students with strengths in the arts, while promoting inclusivity and creativity in the education system.
Under the new policy, applicants for courses such as Fine Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, and Languages will no longer be required to have a credit in Mathematics to qualify for admission. However, English Language and other relevant art subjects remain mandatory.
Mathematics will, however, remain compulsory for candidates pursuing programmes in the Sciences, Technology, and Social Sciences.
The ministry noted that the reform could open up to 300,000 additional admission opportunities each year, help reduce the number of out-of-school youths, and boost vocational and technical education across the country.
Meanwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have been directed to update their admission guidelines to reflect the new policy, while schools and counsellors are expected to adjust their subject advisory systems accordingly.
