Nigerian woman in viral video defends tearing husband’s passport at Lagos Airport, cites years of marital struggles

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated a formal probe into the incident.

In an interview with @JejojaFamily TV, she revealed that her drastic behavior was a result of unresolved issues in their marriage, which she claimed had been ongoing for a long time.

A Nigerian woman who made headlines after destroying her husband’s passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has spoken out about her actions.

In an interview with @JejojaFamily TV, she revealed that her drastic behavior was a result of unresolved issues in their marriage, which she claimed had been ongoing for a long time.

She emphasised that her decision was not impulsive, revealing that she initially intended to tear the passport while in Europe but chose to wait until they reached Nigeria to spare her husband additional stress.

“These issues have been going on for a very long time. I was just dancing to the tune till I arrived in my motherland Nigeria, and it just happened,” she said.

Addressing critics, she urged them to consider the underlying causes rather than just the act itself. “I am not a mad woman who would just come and act like that. I have my reasons,” she added, expressing frustration over the social media backlash.

She also described how her husband’s control over her social media accounts and email contributed to her distress, leading to her drastic decision.

She said, “Do you think I will just come up and tear his passport like that? No. I don’t have to do that. I have gone through a lot of things. Family issues here and there every time. My husband cannot speak. It took me a long time because he is the one controlling my page for me.”

“I suffered with this my husband. I know how many years I suffered with him,” she lamented.

In response to calls for her arrest, she challenged her critics, asserting that those who understand her situation would sympathise.

“I know the pains I’m passing through. Look at my eyes; I cry every day,” she said, highlighting the emotional toll of her marital struggles.

The identities of the couple remain undisclosed, but they are believed to be from Edo State.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated a formal probe into the incident.

This was confirmed in a press statement issued late of Sunday by Kenneth Udo, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), saying the woman had been identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, holding passport number A11990869.

The viral video shows NIS personnel present during the incident, yet failing to intervene. Despite the woman’s open admission, proudly declaring “na me tear am” (I’m the one who tore it), she was permitted to depart the airport without being detained or facing any consequences.

In the viral video, the irate woman unapologetically confessed to destroying her husband’s passport.

After boldly confessing to the act, the woman took their two children with her and abandoned her husband, who seemed shocked and left speechless by the sudden turn of events.

“Bring my children out for me. If you want to sleep there, you sleep there. Come and go. This is Nigeria. Na here you dey” (You’re in Nigeria now),” she told her husband.

NIS officials consoled the husband, urging him to remain calm and composed, and surprisingly advised him to respond with silence, implying that as a man, he should quietly endure the humiliation without speaking out.
