The member representing Kokona East State Constituency, Honourable Daniel Ogah Ogazi, has been unanimously selected as new Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, report from Lafia, the state capital has stated.
It was said Ogazi’s emergence came on the heels of a caucus consensus by members of the Assembly, following the sacking of the former Speaker, Ibrahim Balarabe, by the Court of Appeal.
The court’s verdict, which nullified the previous Speaker’s election, paved the way for the new speaker to emerge within the State Assembly based on an overwhelming choice of Daniel Ogazi by his colleagues.
A member who participated in the caucus who spoke on condition anonymity said Ogazi’s emergence came as a result of a unanimous decision to select him as their speaker.
Recalled that Ogazi had contested for the speakership seat with the sacked speaker when the House was inaugurated and emerged victorious, but powers that be in the state worked against him in favour of Balarabe.
However, Balarabe’s sack was the verdict of electoral appeal panel, which nullified an earlier tribunal ruling that declared the former Speaker.
“Widely experienced in public service and legislative acumen, Ogazi expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him by his colleagues.
“He acknowledged the responsibility bestowed upon him and pledged to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and diligent representation in his new role”, the anonymous member said.
On his part, the elated Ogazi said, “This transition in leadership is a testament to the resilience of democratic institutions and the adherence to the rule of law. Nasarawa State House of Assembly remains committed to its legislative duties and ensuring the welfare of the people it represents”.
As Ogazi assumes the position of Speaker, a member of the Assembly said the state should anticipate a period of renewed focus on legislative responsibilities, working collaboratively to address the concerns of the people and contribute to the development of Nasarawa State.
