Arsenal moved level on points with the Premier League leaders after securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium on a rain-soaked afternoon, keeping their title defence on course.
Goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel sealed the crucial three points for Mikel Arteta’s side, who dominated much of the encounter despite missing several key players through injury and tactical changes.
With Bukayo Saka expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks, Arteta made five changes to the team that drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich in their previous outing.
Viktor Gyökeres, Ben White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Mikel Merino and Eberechi Eze were brought into the starting line-up as Arsenal sought to maintain their push for another league title.
The hosts made an early breakthrough in the seventh minute through their first set-piece goal of the season.
Martin Ødegaard delivered a corner that Gabriel met with a header, creating confusion in the Everton penalty area. Konsa reacted quickest to the loose ball, poking it home from close range to register his first goal for Arsenal.
Everton threatened to take advantage of defensive errors involving goalkeeper David Raya and defender Ben White, but the visitors failed to convert their opportunities.
Arsenal were unable to extend their advantage before the interval, leaving the Gunners with a narrow 1-0 lead at half-time.
The North London side, however, tightened their grip on the contest after the restart, controlling possession and limiting Everton’s attacking opportunities.
Their dominance eventually produced a second goal with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Substitute Bruno Guimarães initiated the move with a well-weighted pass to White on the right side of the penalty area. The defender responded with a looping cross towards the far post, where Gabriel rose to head the ball beyond Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The goal was subjected to a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review for a possible offside infringement, but the decision was upheld.
With a two-goal cushion, Arsenal managed the closing stages comfortably, ensuring Everton had little opportunity to mount a comeback.
The victory represented an important step in Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title, with the Gunners closing the gap at the top of the table to goal difference.
