Police confirm death of boy allegedly shot by Catholic priest in Imo

Imo State Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of a boy allegedly shot by a Catholic priest, Father Joseph Enyinaya, after the victim reportedly set off fireworks (commonly known as knockouts) within a church premises in Imo State.

Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, disclosed the incident during an interview with newsmen on Thursday.

“The police have commenced an investigation into the matter. This is all I can say for the moment,” Okoye stated.

The incident reportedly happened at the the St Columbus Catholic Church in the Amaimo community Ikeduru local government area of the state.

According to sources, the incident happened during the New Year Mass held on January 1, 2025, in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.

It has since sent the community into shock and chaos as many have condemned this action by the Catholic priest, calling for a proper investigation and arrest of the suspect.

It was reported that the Catholic priest picked up a firearm and shot the young boy who was said to have thrown a knockout into the church premises.
