365Daily – Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
The actor’s death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs on Wednesday September 16, 2026.
In a statement announcing his passing, the family described Jacobs as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and referred to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.”
The statement gave his dates of birth and death as July 11, 1942, to September 16, 2026.
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect its privacy as it mourns the veteran actor.
Born in 1942, Jacobs built a career spanning several decades across theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and appeared in British television productions and international films before returning to Nigeria.
He subsequently became one of the prominent figures in Nigeria’s film industry, earning recognition for his performances and contributions to the growth of Nollywood.
Jacobs received several honours during his career, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. In 2011, he was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
He was married to veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
Jacob’s death has prompted tributes from colleagues, public figures and admirers across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
