365Daily – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan, on Friday arrived in Nigeria to promote the Invictus Games.
Prince Harry founded the Games which support the rehabilitation of wounded and sick Service members and veterans, including Nigerian soldiers engaged in a 14-year conflict against Islamic extremists, in 2014. This year’s events marks its 10th anniversary.
After a ceremony in Abuja to welcome them to the country, Prince Harry spoke with some Nigerian students of the Lightway Academy on the need to speak out about mental health, saying it helps in the fight against stigmatisation.
Wearing a traditional Nigerian bead necklace around his neck which was presented to him amd his wife each, he said: “If you take anything away from today, just know that mental health affects every single person.
“The more you talk about it the more you can kick stigma away.”
The duo thereafter departed for a meeting with Nigerian military commanders as part of the Invictus programme.
Harry, a former army captain who served as a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan, has been boosting rehabilitation through sports.
Last year, an ex-Nigerian soldier, Peacemaker Azuegbulam, who lost his leg in combat, became the first African to win a gold at the games in Germany.
Harry will visit a military hospital in Kaduna State where he will speak with troops wounded in combat and later travel to Lagos.
