If the goal of those sponsoring these thugs and attacks is to instill fear in the hearts of the people, they have failed woefully

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned an alleged attack on its members during a peaceful grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, OSA Director, Esq., the party described the incident as “unprovoked and dastardly,” alleging that its members were attacked by suspected state-sponsored thugs.
The NDC said the alleged attack was unacceptable and called on security agencies to take immediate steps to protect opposition members and other citizens participating in lawful political activities.
According to the party, its members have a constitutional right to participate in the democratic process through peaceful meetings and political assemblies, insisting that intimidation would not deter it from exercising that right.
The opposition party also alleged that its members had faced similar incidents in Enugu and other parts of the South-East, describing the development as a threat to freedom of association and democratic participation.
The NDC further accused security agencies of failing to respond promptly to attacks allegedly targeting opposition members in Enugu and across the South-East.
It cited two previous incidents in Imo State, where it said party members were attacked during a town hall meeting and a consultation exercise involving its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.
The party also alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu was unsettled by what it described as the growing momentum of the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NDC maintained that no political group could prevent it from participating in the electoral process, vowing to continue its grassroots mobilisation and engagement across the country.
“If the goal of those sponsoring these thugs and attacks is to instill fear in the hearts of the people, they have failed woefully,” the party said, adding that the incident would strengthen its determination to mobilise support for its candidates.
The party called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the alleged attack and ensure that those responsible, including anyone found to have sponsored the incident, are brought to justice.
The NDC said it would not be intimidated and would continue to organise, mobilise and advocate for what it described as a stronger democratic space ahead of the 2027 elections.
