365Daily – The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the 10th National Assembly to delivering a people-oriented Constitution.
Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Levinus Nwabughiogu, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Saturday, February 21, 2025.
Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day retreat organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Kalu emphasised the importance of the ongoing constitutional review process.
The retreat was convened to review bills, incorporate expert input, familiarise members with legislative proposals, prioritise them based on national interest, and prepare for zonal public hearings and a joint session with the Senate.
The Deputy Speaker, who also chairs the committee, commended his colleagues for their dedication and expressed confidence that their collective efforts would produce a Constitution that truly reflects the aspirations of Nigerians.
During the retreat, the committee reviewed, rectified, and voted on over 151 bills referred to it by the House. The proposed amendments span thematic areas such as federal structure and power devolution, local government autonomy, public revenue, fiscal federation, revenue allocation, electoral reforms, and judicial reforms.
Kalu lauded the team spirit exhibited by lawmakers and urged them to sustain their commitment to the process. He stressed the urgency of their work in view of upcoming elections, noting that their progress signaled a promising future for Nigeria’s constitutional framework.
“We are proud of the dedication and hard work shown by members of this committee. Your commitment ensures that we stay on track to delivering a Constitution that genuinely represents the will of the people,” Kalu stated.
He acknowledged potential challenges in the reform process but encouraged members to remain resolute in their efforts. “There may be obstacles along the way, but with determination and diligence, we will overcome them. Let us continue working together to make this vision a reality,” he added.
