365Daily – A former member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, Hon. Farouk Lawan, has regained freedom after completing a five-year jail term for soliciting and receiving a $500,000 bribe from billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola.
Lawan regained freedom from the Kuje Correctional facility in Abuja on Tuesday, October, 22, 2024.
In a statement to announce his release, the ex-lawmaker who was know for his insightful and robust debates on the floor of the House of Representatives, wrote, “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life as I step out of Kuje Custodial Centre, with a heart full of gratitude to Allah SWT for seeing me through this trial,” he said in a statement he signed.
The former lawmaker who gained the title of Mr Integrity during the Patricia Etteh saga in 2007 thanked friends and family for their support in a “particularly trying phase of my life”.
“My gratitude is deep, I’m alive and in good health and high spirits to be with my family, friends, and associates. I don’t take that for granted,” he said.
“I remain grateful and indebted to my family and friends who stood by me through this particularly trying phase of my life.”
Born in 1962, Lawan is married with five children. Before joining politics, he was a lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic. He got elected into the House of Representatives in 1999 and served four terms. He was widely seen as a future governor of Kano State before his bribery indictment.
