365Daily – The Inspector-General of Police has approved the dismissal and prosecution of a police officer over the killing of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State.
The Nigeria Police Force disclosed this in a statement on the fatal shooting of a young man, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26. It said all officers linked to the incident were earlier withdrawn from the Delta State Command and redeployed to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on the directive of the IGP for disciplinary action.
According to the statement, the Force Disciplinary Committee, after reviewing the case, found the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, guilty of breaching Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms. The committee held that his conduct was unlawful, unprofessional and inconsistent with the duty to protect lives.
Following the findings, the committee recommended the dismissal of Usman and other officers found culpable. The recommendation has since been endorsed by the IGP and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
The police added that after the completion of internal procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over the killing.
Reaffirming its position, the Force said it maintains a zero-tolerance stance on abuse of power and the unlawful use of force, stressing that no officer is permitted to take a life outside the law.
The IGP also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that the case would be pursued to ensure accountability.
The police called on the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to discipline, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
