Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idris Muhammad Gobir, has called for stringent measures to address Nigeria’s porous border issues.
He emphasized that the current situation has led to an influx of criminals and illegal weapons, exacerbating security challenges in the North-West region. Gobir stressed the need for strict scrutiny of people entering the country, similar to the measures implemented by Niger Republic.
Statement by Aminu Sulaiman said Gobir highlighted the risks associated with Nigeria’s porous borders, including the influx of criminals and illegal weapons.
The Deputy Governor noted that the negative trend has compounded security challenges in the North-West region.
Gobir expressed optimism that fortifying borders would reduce insecurity challenges to a minimum and advocated for strict scrutiny of people entering the country, citing Niger Republic’s measures as an example.
The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has also been working to address boundary issues and enhance security. Some of their initiatives include.
The NBC has commenced demarcating interstate boundaries, including those between Katsina and Jigawa, and Edo and Enugu states.
The commission aims to foster cooperation between Nigeria and its neighboring countries to tackle security challenges.
The NBC has conducted sensitization workshops to address boundary disputes and promote collaboration among states.
The NBC’s efforts aim to promote peaceful coexistence, strengthen intergovernmental relations, and support socio-economic development.
