The Nigeria Police Force has warned political parties, candidates, supporters and residents against acts capable of disrupting the Osun State Governorship Election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The warning was issued under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as the Force called on all stakeholders to work towards ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.
The Police cautioned that individuals or groups who attempt to disrupt the election through violence, intimidation, thuggery or other unlawful activities will face the full weight of the law.
It identified ballot snatching, voter intimidation, vote buying and clashes among rival supporters as some of the recurring electoral offences that would attract strict enforcement.
The Force stressed that anyone found involved in electoral offences, either as a direct perpetrator or sponsor, would be arrested and prosecuted regardless of political affiliation, position or status.
The NPF also reiterated that the responsibility for providing security during the election rests with constitutionally recognised security agencies.
It specifically warned the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, vigilante groups, the Joint Civilian Task Force (CJTF), hunters’ associations, community-based security groups, neighbourhood watch organisations and other non-state or quasi-security formations against participating in election security operations.
According to the Police, such groups are not authorised to escort electoral materials, provide security at polling units, establish checkpoints or carry arms during the election.
The Force urged political actors, voters, community leaders and all security-related organisations to comply with the directive, stressing that cooperation among stakeholders is essential to maintaining peace and protecting the integrity of the electoral process in Osun State.
