365Daily – The Federal Government has invited Nigerians to submit memoranda and policy proposals on the proposed National Policing Bill as part of efforts to develop a legal and operational framework for the establishment of state police across the country.
The call was made by the Presidential Working Group on the proposed National Policing Bill following its meeting at the State House, Abuja, chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
In a statement issued on Monday, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said contributions from the public would be reviewed and incorporated into the draft bill before it is subjected to wider national consultations.
“Submissions will be reviewed and integrated into the draft bill, which will then be subject to further national consultation before being finalised and sent to the National Assembly,” the statement said.
According to Onanuga, the Working Group is reviewing the Police Act 2020, the Police Service Commission framework, police regulations and other relevant laws to produce a modern and effective policing system.
He said the proposed framework would establish national minimum standards for state policing, define readiness criteria for states seeking to operate police services, clarify jurisdictional responsibilities, provide independent oversight mechanisms, safeguard human rights and ensure sustainable funding.
The presidential spokesman said the window for submission of memoranda would remain open for two weeks, giving citizens, professional bodies, civil society organisations, security agencies, state and local governments, academics and other stakeholders the opportunity to make inputs.
He added that the draft Executive Bill is expected to be presented to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026, after which it will undergo further national consultations before receiving final approval and being transmitted to the National Assembly.
