365Daily – The Senate has resolved to probe Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for alleged breaches of the federal character principle.
This is sequel to the adoption of a motion raised by Sen. Osita Ngwu in plenary on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
In the motion, the lawmaker condemned the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Pension Commission (PENCOM), Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), and others for failing to ensure fair representation in appointments.
It thereafter mandated its Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs to investigate the agencies and others to fight against systemic imbalance.
Speaking on the motion, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, challenged his colleagues, asking, “Who is marginalising who?” He pointed out that all major federal appointments go through Senate confirmation, raising concerns about whether the legislative body has been complicit in approving lopsided recruitments or promotions.
Senator Ngwu’s motion also raised questions about the Federal Character Commission (FCC), the agency mandated to enforce compliance. He highlighted how the FCC has been weakened by political interference, underfunding, and lack of enforcement powers.
