The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, over his reported claim that he could not afford medications for his late mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, before her death at the age of 89.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC expressed condolences to Amaechi over his mother’s death while sarcastically praying for his financial recovery.

The party recalled that Amaechi had served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, among other political positions.

The APC said it was difficult to reconcile his extensive years in public office with his reported inability to afford his mother’s medical treatment.

The party also referenced an earlier statement attributed to Amaechi that he had become financially constrained to the extent that his wife was feeding him.

According to the APC, Amaechi’s claims raised questions about his ability to remain productive and financially independent outside public office.

It accused the former minister of having benefited from public office for decades, arguing that his reported financial difficulties only a few years after leaving government were a cause for concern.

The party further criticised Amaechi’s bid to become Vice President in the 2027 general election under the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

It argued that the presidency should not be regarded as a means of securing personal financial comfort, insisting that public office must be pursued in the interest of Nigerians.

The APC concluded that Amaechi’s own statements, particularly his claims of financial hardship, were evidence of what it described as his unsuitability for the vice-presidential position.

The party also prayed for the repose of the soul of Amaechi’s mother and wished him good health.
