The National Population Commission, NPC, has flagged off 2024 Nigeria verbal and social Autopsy study across the 23 local government areas of the state.
Federal Commissioner representing Sokoto State, Alhaji Chiso Abdullahi, stated that during a press briefing held at the conference hall of the commission along Dendo Road Sokoto.
Alhaji Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo who spoke on behalf of national chairman of the commission Alhaji Nasir Isa Kwarra noted that the survey is designed to provide data into the causes of under-five and maternal deaths.
He explained that the survey which is in collaboration with federal ministry of Health is being carried out all over the country and aimed at providing information that will help to reducing preventable death among this category of people.
Alhaji Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo further explained that, the VASA Survey would assist government to plan and address the biomedical and social causes of the death of children under five and women of productive age.
The federal commissioner said the survey has officially commenced on the 4th of this month and end on 15th December 2024.
He said during the exercise the data collectors will visit households to interview family members that will help to understand the circumstances surrounding maternal and child death.
Earlier in a welcome address, the State Director National Population Commission Alhaji Malami Marafa Gagi described the exercise as very sensitive that requires the cooperation and support of every individual and Communities.
Alhaji Malami Marafa Gagi therefore called on traditional rulers and community leaders to mobilize their people on the significant of the survey considering its roles in reducing preventable death among children and women of productive age.
He then commended stakeholders for their unwavering support and commitment towards the success of all programmes being initiated by the commission and hope the tempo would be sustained.
