The National Youths Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Kebbi State chapter, has called on local government council chairmen in the state to embark on thorough staff audit to stem redundancy and overstaffing in some local government areas.
The NYCN chairman in Kebbi State, Engineer Ahmad Rufai Abubakar made the call in his reaction to the Supreme Court judgement, which granted full financial autonomy to 774 local councils in Nigeria.
Reacting to claims that some local councils chairmen may end up bankrupting their local governments to the extent they won’t be able to pay their staff salaries, he said proper staff audit would save a lot of money for salaries and other capital projects .
“I urge you to clean your payroll to weed out ghost workers to ensure those who turn up for work would get paid otherwise redundant staff may consume large chunk of money”, he said.
He noted that the financial autonomy for local councils is a welcome development as it will bring the youth closer to the grassroots through myriad of social empowerment now that the local has the financial muscle to carry the youth along. He commended President Bola Tinubu for breaking the jinx.
While applauding Kebbi State governor, Nasir Idris, for running a youth-friendly government, he expressed optimism that the governor will implement the financial autonomy as granted by the apex court.
On youth in politics, he stated that the body is satisfied with youth representation in Governor Idris’ government as over one thousand youth have been appointed by the government and are doing well.
He urged the youth to take part in the forthcoming local governments polls in August, 2024, and admonished them to be law-abiding and shun social vices, which are capable of destroying their future as youth.
