365Daily – Seven serving governors across four political parties on Friday had their elections upheld as Supreme Court delivered judgments in respect of their March 18, 2023 election cases.
The affected governors are Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Alex Otti (Abia), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi).
By the judgments, it shows that three candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party won three cases, while the All Progressives Congress won three, the Labour Party and the New Nigerian Peoples Party won one each.
Notable among the judgments is that of Abba Kabir Yusuf whose election was earlier nullified by the Kano State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Appeal Court who ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, did not stamp some of the result sheets in some places where he won.
Another interesting case was that of Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State who earlier had his election nullified by the Court of Appeal on the ground that his political party, the PDP did not obey a high court order on conduct of primary election in the Plateau.
Meanwhile, there was a widespread jubilation in Kano as supporters of the NNPP thronged the Kano home of the leader of the party and former governor of the state, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to celebrate the victory of Governor Abba Yusuf.
Another election judgment that most political watchers are looking up for is that of Nasarawa State between the governor, Abdullahi Alhaji Sule of the APC and former member House of Representatives, Honourable David Emmanuel Umbugadu coming up on Monday, January 15, 2024.
