365Daily – The Supreme Court on Friday, January 12, 2024, nullified the decision of the Appeal Court which sacked the Governor of Kano State, Yusuf Abba.
365Daily recalls that the tribunal had set aside the victory of Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) after declaring 165,663 of his votes invalid due to unstamped or unsigned ballot papers.
The appellate court declared that the governor was not properly sponsored by NNPP, thus violating the provisions of Section 177 (c) of the constitution. It then declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the election.
Yusuf sought redress at the Supreme Court, and on Friday, Justice John Okoro, on behalf of the court, ordered that all the ballot papers from which the appellant votes were deducted should be restored as they contain the logo of INEC and the coat of arms as prescribed by the provisions of the Electoral Act.
He also held that the issue of party membership is an internal affair of the party.
