Management of Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, has disclosed that it has arrested five suspected notorious criminals operating illegal checkpoints during a joint clearance operation with its staff, members of the taskforce on illegal roadblocks and security agents.
Acting Executive Chairman of BIRS, Emmanuel Agema, who made the disclosure in a statement said the team arrested the five suspects at one of such locations in Akerior, Ushongo Local Government Area where members of the joint operation discovered a one-room rented apartment the touts were using as operational base while others were arrested in Vandeikya Local Government Area.
Agema whose disclosure was contained in a statement signed by his media assistant Jacintha Bernard made available to journalists, yesterday, in Makurdi, said members of the joint operation including Nigerian Security and Civil Defence, NSCDC, during the exercise found items such as clothes, mosquito nets, a register book and receipt booklet bearing” Benue Associates of Tiv BERANDA Co” among others, belonging to the suspects, adding that the items were equally destroyed.
The acting executive chairman vowed to sustain the fight against operators of the illegal checkpoints bent on sabotaging efforts of the present administration towards providing dividends of democracy to Benue people by cornering revenue to private use, disclosing that the team dismantled the illegal checkpoints and assured that those arrested would be prosecuted.
