Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, says the reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium (ABS) will help restore Kaduna’s status as a major sporting centre in Nigeria.
Sani stated this on Tuesday during an inspection of the ongoing project, accompanied by former Super Eagles stars Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro.
The governor explained that the stadium was being transformed into a modern sporting facility built to FIFA standards, with the capacity of its main bowl increased from 16,000 to 33,000 spectators.
He said the upgraded complex would also feature a hybrid playing pitch, which he described as the first of its kind in Nigeria, as well as other facilities designed to support high-level sporting activities.
According to him, the training pitches have already been completed, while construction work continues on the main bowl, ticketing areas, media center and athletes’ hostel.
Sani said the project was not simply about renovating an old stadium but was part of a broader plan to revive Kaduna’s sporting heritage, create opportunities for young people and attract major competitions to the state.
“Our objective is larger than rebuilding a stadium. We are restoring Kaduna’s historic place at the heart of Nigerian sports, attracting major competitions, expanding opportunities for our young people, increasing internally generated revenue, and stimulating wider economic activity,” he said.
The governor expressed confidence that the reconstructed stadium would be completed by November and subsequently host major national and international sporting events.
Sani also announced the fulfilment of a promise made about 30 years ago to members of Nigeria’s Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold-winning football team.
He disclosed that plots of land had been allocated to the football legends, while some streets across Kaduna State would be named after them.

Amokachi, in his response, commended Sani for investing in sports infrastructure and upgrading football facilities to international standards.
He said the improved facilities would give young footballers the right environment to develop their abilities and pursue careers in the sport.
The former Super Eagles forward also said the reconstruction of the stadium would enhance Kaduna’s chances of hosting major football competitions and further consolidate its reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting centres.
He praised the governor for honouring the Atlanta 1996 Olympic champions, stressing that the team’s historic contribution to Nigerian football deserved lasting recognition.
