A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 26-year-old man, Sunday Richard, to 10 months imprisonment for stealing hair extensions valued at N670,000.
Richard, whose residential address was not disclosed, pleaded guilty to the one-count charge brought against him.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel said the evidence presented before the court was sufficient to establish the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The magistrate subsequently sentenced Richard to 10 months in a correctional centre without an option of fine.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that Richard committed the offence on Aug. 26 at Barnawa, Kaduna.
Leo said the case was reported to the police by Helen Christian, a resident of 20B Angola Street, Barnawa.
According to the prosecutor, the complainant was attending to a customer in her shop when Richard entered the premises, pretending to be interested in purchasing hair extensions.
He said Christian, however, noticed the defendant putting some items into a bag.
“The complainant saw the defendant put something inside his bag and leave the shop without making any payment, prompting her to raise an alarm.
“Upon hearing the alarm, the defendant threw away the stolen items and attempted to escape, but he was apprehended and handed over to the police,” Leo told the court.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
