Implementation of the 2026 budget has yet to commence, stressing that no procurement process has been initiated for the project

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has dismissed reports claiming that ₦1 billion was earmarked solely for the purchase of musical instruments for churches in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State.
In a statement issued by his office, Kalu clarified that the actual budgetary provision is ₦780 million and forms part of a broader youth reorientation and social support programme to be implemented through faith-based organisations in the constituency.
According to the statement, the initiative is designed to support selected churches across Bende Federal Constituency with evangelical instruments and public address systems as part of efforts to facilitate community-based programmes for young people and other residents.
The Deputy Speaker’s office explained that the project is not limited to the procurement of musical equipment but is intended to strengthen faith-based organisations as partners in youth engagement and community development.
The statement further noted that implementation of the 2026 budget has yet to commence, stressing that no procurement process has been initiated for the project.
It also disclosed that a technical error was identified in the procurement description contained in the budget document and assured that the necessary corrections would be made before implementation begins.
Kalu’s clarification comes amid widespread public debate over the budget provision and increasing scrutiny of constituency project allocations in the 2026 Appropriation Act.
The Deputy Speaker’s office maintained that the reports suggesting ₦1 billion was allocated exclusively for church musical instruments were inaccurate and did not reflect the actual scope or value of the approved project.
