The Ebonyi State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has rejected calls for the resignation of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, following the death of his personal physiotherapist, Miss Mary Habila.
Habila died on June 27 at the minister’s residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abakaliki, the council stressed that only a transparent, impartial and credible investigation could determine the actual circumstances surrounding her death.
The statement jointly signed by the State Chairman, Douglas Ochishi, and the Publicity Secretary, Ali Ikechukwu, described the demand by the Northern Youths Council of Nigeria for Umahi’s resignation and suspension as hasty and capable of interfering with ongoing investigations.
The council extended its condolences to Habila’s family, friends and loved ones, praying that they find the strength to cope with the loss and that the deceased rests in peace.
It also commended Umahi for supporting an independent investigation, including a forensic autopsy, to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.
The youth body urged the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to carry out a thorough, professional and unbiased investigation free from external influence to ensure justice for all parties involved.
According to the council, no individual should be judged or condemned until investigations have been concluded and credible evidence has been established through lawful and transparent procedures.
The NYCN further argued that the calls for the minister’s resignation appeared politically motivated and intended to tarnish the reputation of a serving public official.
It maintained that it would not stand by while one of Ebonyi State’s prominent sons was subjected to public condemnation without credible evidence or the outcome of a lawful investigation.
The council also appealed to youth organisations, civil society groups and other stakeholders to refrain from actions or comments that could prejudice the ongoing investigation.
It cautioned social media users against spreading misinformation, encouraging speculation or engaging in trial by media before investigators conclude their work.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice, accountability and the rule of law, the NYCN expressed confidence that the relevant authorities would establish the truth through due process.
