Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has held talks with the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, and members of his diplomatic team on issues concerning Nigeria’s democratic development and economic growth.
Obi disclosed this on Tuesday after visiting the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria at the invitation of the diplomatic mission.
According to him, the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s forthcoming elections and Canada’s continued support for strengthening democratic institutions and processes in the country.
The former governor said the discussions also focused on trade and investment, economic development and education, as well as the need for affirmative action to improve women’s participation and representation in politics.
Obi stressed that a peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria would serve not only the interests of its citizens but also align with Canada’s strategic interests.
He noted that a Nigeria capable of providing opportunities and prosperity for its people would unlock its vast economic potential while creating room for stronger partnerships with Canada and other countries across Africa.
The NDC presidential candidate further emphasised the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, promoting greater citizen participation and building an inclusive political system.
He said such a system must provide every Nigerian, irrespective of gender, background or circumstances, with a meaningful opportunity to participate in governance and contribute to national development.
Obi also expressed optimism about sustained engagement with Canada’s diplomatic and business communities, saying such partnerships could support efforts to build a more prosperous, secure and inclusive Nigeria.
“A New Nigeria is Possible,” he said.
