FG constitutes committee to assess Nigeria’s security threats

The exercise will also seek to ensure that available resources are strategically allocated to areas of greatest security need, while improving coordination among the nation’s defence, intelligence and security agencies

The Federal Government has constituted a Presidential Committee to undertake a comprehensive assessment of Nigeria’s security threats and develop a five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan aimed at strengthening the country’s national security architecture.

The committee was inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance strategic security planning and improve Nigeria’s capacity to respond effectively to existing and emerging threats.

Among senior government officials who attended the inauguration were the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd.); Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; and the Permanent Secretary, Special Services Office, Aminu Sani Yargaya.

The Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Maj. Gen. Adeyinka Famadewa (Rtd.), will coordinate and provide secretariat support for the committee’s activities.

The committee has been given 90 days to complete and submit its National Threat Assessment and Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for consideration.

The assessment is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of Nigeria’s current and emerging security challenges, while the strategic plan will establish clear defence priorities, identify critical capability gaps and recommend measures for strengthening the country’s security institutions.

The exercise will also seek to ensure that available resources are strategically allocated to areas of greatest security need, while improving coordination among the nation’s defence, intelligence and security agencies.

The initiative is expected to provide the Federal Government with a clearer strategic framework for anticipating security threats, strengthening national defence capabilities and ensuring a more coordinated response to evolving security challenges.
