TCN exposes Kano students to real-world power transmission operations

TCN engineers explained the processes involved in electricity transmission and introduced the students to major equipment used at the substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has taken science students of Government Girls Secondary School, Dukawuya, Kano, through the practical operations of Nigeria’s electricity transmission system during an educational visit to its Kumbotso 330/132kV Transmission Substation.

The educational excursion, organised by the TCN Kano Sub-Region on August 4, 2026, provided the students with an opportunity to experience first-hand how electricity is transmitted and managed beyond the classroom.

During the visit, TCN engineers explained the processes involved in electricity transmission and introduced the students to major equipment used at the substation.

The students were taken through the functions of various transmission facilities and were also given an insight into the operations of the control room, where engineers monitor and manage the flow of electricity across the transmission network.

Particular attention was paid to safety, with the engineers explaining the precautions required when working around high-voltage equipment and other transmission infrastructure.

The students actively participated in the interactive session, asking questions and engaging the engineers on issues relating to electricity generation, transmission, distribution and careers in the power industry.

TCN said the initiative was intended to complement classroom learning by giving the students practical exposure to the technical processes behind the supply of electricity.

The company noted that such engagements could help students develop a deeper understanding of science and engineering while inspiring them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The excursion also demonstrated the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and technical organisations in developing the next generation of professionals capable of addressing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector.

According to TCN, exposing young people to actual engineering environments would help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application while promoting technical competence.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to initiatives that promote engineering education, technical knowledge and human-capital development.

TCN said it would continue to provide learning opportunities that enable students to interact with industry professionals and gain practical insights into the operation of critical national infrastructure.

The company expressed optimism that programmes of this nature would contribute to building a highly skilled workforce capable of sustaining and advancing Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.
