The continued wave of deadly attacks in Benue and Plateau states has once again thrown the nation into mourning, raising fresh concerns over the persistent insecurity affecting several communities across Nigeria.
Reports of the killing of at least 16 people in the Otukpo Nobi community of Benue State, alongside the tragic murder of nine members of a single family, including a two month old baby, in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, underscore the devastating human cost of the country’s security challenges.
For many years, residents of Benue, Plateau and other affected parts of the country have endured repeated attacks that have claimed countless lives, displaced families and disrupted livelihoods. Farming communities have been abandoned, homes destroyed and many survivors left to cope with unimaginable loss.
Protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the foremost duty of government. Every life lost represents a family shattered, a future interrupted and a painful reminder of the urgent need for stronger and more effective security measures.
Addressing the recurring violence requires more than expressions of sympathy after each attack. There is an increasing need for intelligence driven operations, timely security responses and sustained efforts to ensure that those responsible for these crimes are identified, arrested and brought before the law. Ending impunity is essential to restoring public confidence and preventing further bloodshed.
Heartfelt condolences go to the families of those who lost their loved ones, as well as the governments and people of Benue and Plateau States during this difficult period. Prayers are also with those receiving treatment and with communities working to recover from the devastating attacks.
The security of Nigerians should remain a shared national priority that transcends political differences. Lasting peace and meaningful development can only be achieved when citizens are able to live, work and raise their families without fear of violence.
