The immediate-past administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari planned to conduct a census in 2022, but later postponed.

365Daily – The House of Representatives has asked the director-general of the National Population Commission (NPC) to account for the N200 billion provided for the suspended 2023 Population and Housing Census which did not hold.
To this end, it has mandated its Committee on population to invite the director general to give a detailed report on how the fu ds were expended and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
This was sequel to the adoption of a motion moved by Hon Clement Akanni, titled, “Need to Investigate N200 Billion Spent on the Suspended 2023 Population and Housing Census.”
The House noted that the immediate-past administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari planned to conduct a census in 2022, but later postponed to 2023.
The lawmakers recalled that earlier in March 2023, the former Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, said a total of N869 billion would be required for the exercise.
It added that the NPC had declared that it has spent about N200 billion to prepare for the exercise which was suspended indefinitely by former President Muhammadu Buhari a few days before leaving office.
