After extensive committee deliberations, eight staff members comprising a Chief Superintendent for Immigration (CSI), two Deputy Superintendents for Immigration (DSI), two Assistant Superintendents for Immigration II (ASI2) and three ranking members were summarily dismissed from the Service
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the dismissal of eight members of its staff from the service, while another 18 have also been sanctioned for various crimes ranging from indiscipline to labour extortion and other forms of corrupt practices.
This is because a total of 100 of the organization’s officers and men so far assigned to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos have been reassigned to other units and departments, pending the determination of a recent accusation of bribery against them by a traveler.
The development is contained in a statement issued, Friday morning, and signed by Kenneth Kure, Chief Superintendent of Immigration in the NIS Public Relations Unit.
Mr. Kure signed the statement on behalf of the Comptroller General, Isah Idris.
According to the statement, the decision was made after the approval granted by the Board of Immigration, Fire, Correction, Civil Protection and Civil Protection Services (CDCFIB), which would have indicated that “the conduct of the personnel has remained highly inappropriate and unacceptable as members of the Service.”
NIS said the firing of the eight officers in question followed due process and established procedures backed by the law that governs the agency.
He said that a total of 35 staff members had previously been presented before the processes of the Superior Disciplinary Committee (SDC) and the Ordered Chamber Trial (ORT) “to determine their level of guilt in the various accusations of crimes against discipline that are from labor extortion, acute practices, dishonest conduct, absent from duty without official permission (AWOL) among others, as preferred against them”.
The statement reads in part: “After extensive committee deliberations, eight staff members comprising a Chief Superintendent for Immigration (CSI), two Deputy Superintendents for Immigration (DSI), two Assistant Superintendents for Immigration II (ASI2) and three ranking members were summarily dismissed from the Service.
“In addition, another Chief Superintendent of Immigration was ordered to go into mandatory retirement, while nine other staff members were demoted. They include one Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI2) who has been demoted to the rank of Immigration Inspector, two Inspectors who have been reduced in rank to Assistant Inspectors and six (6) other junior staff members who have been he has ordered to lose his current position.
