365Daily – In a bid to end the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government has ordered Vice-Chancellors (VCs) in universities to re-open schools and to allow students resume lectures.
Recall that the National Industrial Court last week ordered ASUU to resume work. The Court gave the judgement after the Federal Government dragged the Union to court to compel it to end its strike which began on February 14.
The order to the VCs was contained in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of National Universities Commission (NUC), Mr Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, on Monday, September 26, 2022, in Abuja.
The letter, which was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities, called on them to re-open the universities.
The NUC directed them to “ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses.”
ASUU is demanding for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.
The union accused the Federal Government of reneging on a 2009 agreement on increased funding for universities and increasing lecturers’ salaries.
Several meetings between ASUU and the Federal Government have ended in deadlock due to inability to reach an agreement on the issues.
