Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Ali, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba, near Jos, has called for regular training and retraining of its personnel to tackle insecurity in the country.
Ali, at the closing of its Inter Brigade Combat Proficiency Competition held at the cantonment on Thursday, decried the myriad of security challenges currently facing the nation.
He said that the competition was organised to enhance the capacity of the officers toward tackling the security challenges facing the country.
He explained that the competition had provided an avenue for participants to enhance their combat skills with a view of securing the lives and property of law abiding citizens.
”As you are all aware, the level of insecurity in this country requires constant training of our personnel to enable us secure the lives and property of law abiding citizens.
”It is worthy of note that this competition was organised with the aim of training subaltern officers for quick response to emerging threats in carrying out our roles in a joint environment with other security agencies.
”Even though this is a competition, I hope that lesson learned would be put to practice in your assigned duties in your various units and formations.
”This competition no doubt has enhanced the spirit of sportsmanship, cooperation and teamwork needed in the accomplishment of missions and tasks,” he said.
The GOC said that the participants competed in the areas of tug of war, weapon handling, map reading and obstacle crossing.
Ali, who lauded the performance of the participants, urged them to put into good use the knowledge gained from the exercise as they return to their various formations.
Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau, who declared the event closed commended the Nigerian Army for the regular training and retraining of its personel to adequately respond to current security challlenges confronting the nation.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Security, retired Maj.-Gen. Augustine Agundu, the governor said his administration will not allow the state to go back to the its dark days.
Lalong attributed the relative peace currently being enjoyed in the state and country to the dedication and diligent disposition of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the formations that participated in the competition include; 6 Brigade Jalingo, 23 Brigade Yola, 33 Brigade Bauchi and the division’s Garrison, Rukuba.
NAN also reports that the division’s Garrison emerged overall winner of the four-day competition having scored 950 points to beat the other three formations.(NAN)
