2023: Atiku chooses Okowa over Wike for running mate

By Saidu Idris

365Daily – There are indications that the presidential flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 presidential elections, former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, has settled for the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, as running mate.

Okowa’s contemporary, Rivers State’s Nyesom Wike, had been chosen by governors and politicians from the south-east and south-south regions to fly the party’s flag with Atiku.

But in a new twist, the Delta Governor was favoured by the aspirant and others who felt he would work in the “best interest of the party as it seeks a return to power next year,” according to anonymous sources.

Okowa’s appeal is said to be from his calm demeanour, which is in contrast to that of  Wike who is said to be “combative” and may deviate from issues based campaigns to other matters.

Already, former Bayelsa senator, Ben Murray Bruce, has applauded the PDP for the emergence of Okowa as the vice presidential candidate of the party.

In a twitter post on Thursday, June 16, 2022, he said: “I congratulate our great party, the PDP, and most especially, my good friend and brother, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, on his emergence as the Vice Presidential Candidate of our great party.

“With this, it is settled that the PDP is not only set for a landslide victory in the general elections, but that we have a formidable team to restore Nigeria.”
