The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, has urged journalists to use their profession to promote good virtues and national unity.
He made the call while receiving Award for Legislative Excellence bestowed on him by the Kano State chapter of the Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of journalists (NUJ), on Saturday in Kano.
The lawmaker was among individuals honoured by the chapel during it’s 2021 Award Presentation and Almanac launch.
Doguwa said that he was also a trained journalist before he joined politics.
“Journalists are pacesetters and teachers who members of the society look up to in moulding opinion in crucial matters that affect them and the nation,” he said.
He hailed organizers of the event and stressed the need to use such occasion to attract notable leaders to discuss the way forward for the nation.
“In as much as the government in power is doing all it can to salvage the country, journalists through annual lectures and symposia can even do better towards promoting national unity, security and socio-economic development,” he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Ibrahim Garba-Shuaibu, said that the awardees were selected for their outstanding performance in various fields of human endeavor.
In his remarks, former Senior Special Assistant to the President on Assembly Matters, Mr Suleiman Kawu-Sumaila, urged the media to intensify efforts in enlightening Nigerians to proffer solutions to the country’s problems.
“I am calling the attention of the chapel to always look and take advantage of such gatherings to enlighten people to reflect on the current situation in the country.
“Let us put our minds together, let us look for the solution to our problems.
“In a gathering like this, it is a good opportunity for us to discuss Nigeria and find solutions the current challenges as a nation,” he said.
At the launch of the almanac, Doguwa made the highest donation of N5 million; Dr Sule Yau Sule, N2 million; Kano State Government, N1 million; Alhaji Suleiman Kawu-Sumaila and Alhaji Inuwa Waya, N500,000 each. (NAN)
