Ahead of the October 31 national elective convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, a former president of the Senate in the aborted Third Republic has been selected as the consensus candidate of the Northern Nigeria extraction.

He was earlier, on Tuesday, announced as the consensus candidate of the North Central, and has been unanimously adopted to present the entire northern in the election.

Ayu’s emergence followed hours of continuous meetings by PDP stakeholders of Northern extraction in Abuja in the past 72 hours.

Meanwhile, following the recommendations of a zoning committee chaired by the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, which suggested that the national chairmanship position of the party be zoned to the north, it can be said to be uhuru for Ayu.

This is because the PDP has approved that recommendation, and with the development, Senator Iyorchia Ayu is likely to emerge the national chairman of the main opposition political party, the PDP.

He hails from Benue State.
