Northwest Convention: Kano PDP suspends Kwankwaso for thuggery

The Kano state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended former governor of Kano state, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over the violence and disruption that marred the Northwest Convention of the party.

365Daily reported on Saturday, April 10, how suspected political thugs disrupted the North-West Zonal Congress of the PDP, which held at the Kaduna International Trade Fairground.

It was however not clear what caused the chaotic situation but there were insinuations supporters of key contenders were responsible for the unfortunate development that led to the destruction of ballot boxes and chairs.

The major contenders for the position of National Vice Chairman Northwest are Sen. Bello Hayatudeen Gwarzo, Aminu Wali and a candidate of former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

In a statement on Friday by the Kano state PDP Secretary, H. A Tsanyawa, he said Kwankwaso directed his supporters to destroy election materials and that the state Executive Council has unanimously resolved that he and his supporters be thereby suspended for three months for the shameful and embarrassing act.

He further disclosed that the suspension was necessitated by complaints from stakeholders of the party and that the Ex – governor has 48 hours to defend himself in accordance with the party’s constitution.

Below is the full statement:

Subject to the numerous complaint received from the members of our great party, the PDP over the incidences of the Northwest Convention, you are requested to defend yourself on the following charges.

1 – That you have lead your supporters into shameful and embarrassing act of thuggery of disrupting Democratic process during PDP Northwest Zonal Convention of 10th April, 2021.

2 – That you are also charge of abusing our two serving Governors and Major Northwest stakeholders present during the convention.

3 – That your supporters have destroyed the election materials on your directive and in your presence.

In our Executive Council Meeting held on Thursday 15th April, 2021, we have unanimously resolved to suspend you and your supporters from party activities for three months in accordance with the provision of section 58 (1) of the PDP constitution.

In the same vein, you are requested to answer this query within 48 hours, and state why provision of section 59 (1) (2) (3) and (4) should not be applied against you.
