Arsenal continued their perfect start to the new Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in Birmingham on Saturday.
The Gunners secured all three points courtesy of a second-half goal from Bukayo Saka, making it two wins from two matches under Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal had begun their campaign in impressive fashion with a 3-0 home victory over newly promoted Coventry City. Aston Villa, meanwhile, were looking to bounce back after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Brighton & Hove Albion in their opening fixture.
Determined to respond in front of their home supporters, Unai Emery’s side included Ian Maatsen and new signing Nicolas Jackson in the starting XI, with Jackson brought in as part of the club’s attacking options alongside Ollie Watkins.
Arsenal controlled much of the first half and created several promising openings, although Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock when Emiliano Buendía struck the crossbar with a powerful effort.
The visitors thought they had been handed a golden opportunity early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty following a challenge on Saka. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned when it was determined that the foul had occurred just outside the penalty area.
The resulting free-kick failed to produce any danger, but Arsenal did not have to wait long for their breakthrough.
Soon afterwards, Riccardo Calafiori delivered a dangerous ball across the face of goal, and Saka was on hand to force the ball over the line and give Arsenal a 1-0 lead.
Villa struggled to mount a serious response as Arsenal remained composed and disciplined for the remainder of the match.
The hosts failed to register a single shot on target throughout the encounter, leaving Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya with little to do as he comfortably secured another clean sheet.
The victory moves Arsenal to six points from their opening two matches, while Villa will be left searching for answers after suffering back-to-back defeats at the start of the campaign.
