Man arraigned in Ibadan over alleged assault on female trader

The defendant violently attacked the complainant, Monsurat Azeez, by punching her and stabbing her on the left arm with a broken bottle

A 26-year-old man, Muritala Taiwo, has been arraigned before the Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, over the alleged assault of a female trader at Agbeni Market.

Taiwo was docked on Thursday on a one-count charge of unlawful assault but pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

Following his plea, the President of the court, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two reliable sureties in like amount.

The court ruled that each surety must present evidence of three years’ tax payment and possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).

Mrs. Akintayo subsequently adjourned the case until August 28 for hearing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Ayodele Ayeni, told the court that the alleged offence occurred on July 18 at about 10:00 a.m. at Agbeni Market in Ibadan.

Ayeni alleged that the defendant violently attacked the complainant, Monsurat Azeez, by punching her and stabbing her on the left arm with a broken bottle.

According to the prosecutor, the alleged offence contravenes Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Volume II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
