The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has extended the January 31 deadline for collection of old naira note.
In a press statement signed in Abuja on Sunday, by governor of the apex bank, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the policy has been extended by 10 days, that is, February 10, 2023.
“A 10 days extension of deadline from January 31, 2023, to February 10, 2023 to allow for collection of more old notes legitimately held by Nigerians and achieve more success in cash swap in our rural communities after which all old notes outside the CBN losses their legal tender status.
“Our CBN Staff currently on mass mobilization and monitoring together with the officials of the EFCC and ICPC will work together to achieve these objectives”.
Emefiele urged all Nigerians to work with the CBN to ensure a hitch-free process for the implementation this programme.
The development follows pressure from the National Assembly, political parties, civil society organisations and millions of Nigerians who complained that the window to return the old notes was too short.
The initial deadline fixed by the apex bank to withdraw the old N1,000, N500 and N200 notes was January 31st, 2023.
But the bank added an additional 10 days to allow Nigerians to meet up with the date.
