365Daily – Following the Federal Government’s announcement of the suspension of its operations in Nigeria, social media platform, Twitter, has expressed deep concern at the decision.

The company’s Senior Policy Communications manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Sarah Hart, told The Cable that the company is investigating the development.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, yesterday announced the Federal Government’s decision to suspend Twitter’s operations in the country hours after it deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari for contravening its rules.

Buhari had, on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, while condemning attacks on government facilities in the country, threatened to handle them in “a language they understand”.

He tweeted: “Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

Mohammed said in a statement issued on Friday, June 4, 2021, that the ban became necessary following “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Quoting Hart’s response via an email, TheCable wrote: “The announcement made by the Nigerian Government that they have suspended Twitter’s operations in Nigeria is deeply concerning.

“We’re investigating and will provide updates when we know more.”
