Armed men invade ABU, kidnap lecturer

Barely 24 hours after 9 students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, were released after payment of ransom, a lecturer,  his wife and daughter, were on Monday abducted within the precincts of the school. 

But while the daughter and the wife have been released, the lecturer remained with the kidnappers as at the time of filing this report.

The incident took place at 12:50 am, according to a statement issued by the director of Public Affairs Directorate of the school, Malam Auwalu Umar.

According to the statement, the gunmen engaged in a gun battle with Policemen who were alerted of the invasion and chased after them.

“The university security dicision quickly informed the operatives of the Police Intelligence  Response team that advanced to the scene following the distress call. There was an exchange of gunfire between the kidnappers and the mobile police operatives. When it was clear that would be overpowered, the kidnappers ran into the Bvush along with the victims.

“As the police went after them up to Kasuwa Du’a Village bordering the university, the kidnappers then released the wife and daughter and went away with the husband. Some empty shells were recovered from the scene.”

It further stated that the Inspector General and other security agencies, as well as relevant government establishments have been duly informed of the incident.

The Vice chancellor of the university, it continued, has called for calm and vigilance within the campus community to avoid a recurrence of the incident.
