The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for mobilizing and releasing ₦100 billion in previously unaccessed matching grants to state governments.
The group highlighted that this intervention comes even as multiple states struggled to provide the required counterpart funding typically necessary to secure federal resources for primary and secondary education upgrades.
Under standard protocols, state governments must contribute a 40% matching fee to access federal basic education grants. Historically, many states have failed to meet this obligation, leaving vital funds tied up.
In a joint statement issued by TMV Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Segun Ogedengbe, the group described the federal government’s decision to disburse the funds despite these deficits as an unprecedented act of benevolence aimed at safeguarding the future of Nigerian children.
According to TMV, the mobilization of these funds aligns with the commission’s 2025–2031 strategic blueprint. The group referenced a recent Abuja press briefing by UBEC Executive Secretary Aisha Garba, which detailed significant infrastructure achievements across the country, including:
- Classroom Development: Construction of ,4600 new classrooms and the renovation of over 6,100 others.
- Sanitation & Water: Provision of 2,780 toilet facilities and 678 boreholes.
- Learning Materials: Supply of 334,000 pieces of school furniture.
The TMV stated that UBEC’s progress serves as tangible evidence that the current administration’s “Renewed Hope” reforms are yielding results. They attributed the commission’s success to newly introduced institutional changes that have enhanced transparency, strengthened project monitoring, and fostered data-driven decision-making.
Urging the commission to sustain its trajectory of accountable governance, the group concluded that the timely release of the grants underscores the federal government’s active commitment to transforming the nation’s basic education sector.
