365Daily – Kwara State Police Command on Monday arraigned controversial singer Badmus Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, before an Upper Area Court in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Portable was arrested on Saturday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, by operatives of the Kwara State Police Command following a petition filed against him by Fuji musician Saheed Osupa Akorede. He was brought before the court presided over by Hon. Sunday Adeniyi.
According to the Police First Information Report (FIR), Osupa accused Portable of criminal defamation, criminal intimidation, inciting public disturbance, and cyberstalking.
Osupa claimed that Portable had made live-streamed videos in which he verbally attacked him, alleging that the singer also damaged his reputation by claiming to have removed Osupa’s music from Apple Music and Spotify—platforms that would have generated income for him.
Police prosecutor Abubakar Issa requested the court to remand Portable in a correctional facility, pending the conclusion of the police investigation.
However, Portable’s counsel, Barr. Adebayo Isaac, urged the court to reject the prosecutor’s request, arguing that the police should have kept Portable in custody if the investigation was still ongoing. He informed the court that the singer had already been granted administrative bail by the police on Sunday and emphasized that Portable is a public figure with a traceable address who would be available for trial if granted bail.
Adebayo based his argument on Sections 172(1) and 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, stating that a proper interpretation of these legal provisions should guide the court in granting bail.
In his ruling, Hon. Sunday Adeniyi granted Portable bail in the sum of N1 million, with two sureties—one of whom must be the chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).
The case was adjourned to April 30, 2025.
