The House of Representatives has urged Nigerians to renew their faith in the country and strengthen their collective resolve to build a more united, peaceful and prosperous nation as Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The call was made in an Independence Day statement issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026, by the spokesman of the House of Representatives, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., mnipr.
The House described Nigeria’s independence as both a legacy to be honoured and a responsibility that must be upheld by successive generations.
According to the lawmakers, the attainment of independence in 1960 represented Nigeria’s commitment to self-governance, national unity and dignity, while the country’s journey since then has been shaped by both significant challenges and notable achievements.
The House acknowledged the difficulties Nigeria has faced over the decades but commended citizens for their resilience, courage and determination to contribute to national development.
It said the 10th National Assembly would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities of legislation, oversight and representation while working to strengthen democratic institutions and promote the welfare and security of Nigerians.
In his Independence Day message, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, urged Nigerians to remain hopeful about the country’s future.
He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to continue making progress through greater unity, stronger democratic institutions and increased opportunities for its citizens.
“As the 10th National Assembly, we remain committed to building a Parliament that listens to the people, responds to their aspirations and strengthens the institutions upon which our democracy rests.
“Our diversity remains our strength. Our democracy remains our shared inheritance. And our future remains a collective responsibility,” the Speaker said.
The House also paid tribute to the generation of Nigerians whose efforts culminated in the country’s independence in 1960.
It extended its recognition to members of the Armed Forces and security agencies for their service, as well as citizens contributing to national development through honest labour, responsible citizenship and service to their communities.
The lawmakers called on Nigerians to use the 66th Independence Anniversary as an opportunity to renew their commitment to the country and play their part in building a nation capable of meeting the aspirations of present and future generations.
The House wished Nigerians a happy Independence Anniversary and prayed for continued peace, progress and blessings for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
