A planned national warning protest by political youth leaders against ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa has been shelved indefinitely following intervention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The demonstration, organized by the Forum of National Youth Leaders of All Political Parties in Nigeria (FNYLPPN), was initially slated for Wednesday, August 5, 2026. However, an emergency security meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday led the group to suspend the action to prevent potential public disruption.
In a joint statement issued by FNYLPPN Chairman Hon. Comrade Eze Onyebuchi Chukwu and Publicity Secretary Ozu Important, the forum disclosed that secret police intelligence pointed to coincidental protests planned by other activist groups on the same day, including the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and the Take It Back Movement.
The DSS warned the youth leaders that simultaneous demonstrations posed a high risk of infiltration by rogue elements, which could compromise public safety and subvert the peaceful intent of their movement.
“Following this security briefing, the Forum’s leadership immediately convened an emergency virtual meeting with members who had already arrived in Abuja from across the nation,” the leadership stated. “We unanimously resolved that public safety and national peace must take precedence over all other considerations.”
Despite the postponement, the coalition reiterated its uncompromising position on the welfare of Nigerians abroad, outlining four core demands an immediate and permanent halt to xenophobic attacks in South Africa, issue comprehensive justice and financial compensation for affected victims, make prompt identification and prosecution of perpetrators, and strengthen bilateral protective frameworks between the Nigerian and South African governments.
The forum acknowledged ongoing diplomatic measures being pursued by the Federal Government and noted that a revised schedule for the protest will be evaluated if diplomatic channels fail to deliver concrete resolutions.
