The Federal Government has ruled out any immediate increase in electricity tariffs, stating that its current focus is on improving power supply, expanding metering, and strengthening the nation’s electricity infrastructure.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this during a media stakeholders’ session in Lagos, where he outlined the administration’s comprehensive strategy to address the long-standing challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector.
According to the minister, the government’s priority is to ensure that consumers are billed only for the electricity they use through the deployment of universal metering. He said efforts are also being intensified to improve the reliability of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the country.
Tegbe revealed that Nigeria has sustained electricity generation at approximately 5,000 megawatts over the past two weeks, attributing the achievement to improved operational coordination within the sector. However, he emphasized that higher power generation alone would not resolve the country’s electricity challenges, noting that efficient transmission, effective distribution, and improved revenue collection are equally critical to achieving a stable power supply.
As part of the ongoing reforms, the Federal Government plans to carry out a technical audit of the national transmission network, modernize critical infrastructure, strengthen major transmission corridors, and implement a Super Grid Programme aimed at enhancing electricity delivery nationwide.
The minister also announced the launch of the Power Force initiative, which will train and engage 5,000 young Nigerians in the installation of electricity meters across the country. He said the programme is designed to close the nation’s metering gap while creating employment opportunities for youths.
Tegbe further disclosed that disputes that previously delayed the procurement of electricity meters have been resolved, clearing the way for the rollout of additional meters. He added that renewable energy projects would continue to expand electricity access to universities, teaching hospitals, and off-grid communities.
Expressing optimism about the reform agenda, the minister said Nigerians should begin to experience noticeable improvements in electricity supply within the next few months as the various initiatives are implemented.
